Recording Transactions
Recording Transactions
Transactions are the heartbeat of your financial data. Accurate transaction tracking keeps budgets, forecasts, and reports aligned with your real-world activity.
Transaction Types
- Income: Paychecks, refunds, reimbursements, and dividends
- Expense: Bills, subscriptions, purchases, and fees
- Transfer: Money moved between your own accounts
- Investment: Buys, sells, and contributions
Add a Transaction
- Select the account the transaction belongs to
- Enter the date, amount, and a clear description
- Choose a category and add tags if needed
- Save and confirm the updated balance
Recurring Transactions
Use recurring transactions for items like rent, payroll, or subscriptions. Keeping these up to date improves forecasting accuracy.
Merchants, search, and bulk actions
- Merchants tab: On Transactions, switch to Merchants to see payees ranked by spend for your date range (uses Merchant when set, otherwise Description). Review StatCards and the top-10 chart, then click a row or chart bar to filter the transaction list.
- Categories tab: Switch to Categories for a donut and ranked list of spend by category (available on Free — not Insights-gated). Uncategorized is shown honestly; click a category to filter the list.
- Search: Press / on desktop to focus search and find transactions by description or notes.
- Bulk categorize: Select multiple rows, open Bulk categorize, choose a category (and optional description), then apply.
- Recurring tab: Use the Recurring view on the same page to manage scheduled income and bills.
See Merchant spend by payee, Categorizing transactions, and Search-first transaction workflow for details.
Reconciliation Tips
- Review transactions weekly to catch duplicates or missing entries
- Use clear categories to make reporting easier
- Attach notes for one-off events or unusual expenses
Cross-currency transfers and edits
When you move money between accounts that use different currencies, the system records posted amounts in each account's currency. Changing the structure of an existing cross-currency transfer (amount, accounts, currency, or certain dates) may require voiding or deleting the transaction and creating a new one, rather than editing it in place—if you see an error when saving, check that you are only adjusting allowed fields or recreate the transfer.
